Chapter 1: Link Building Basics
It was late 1998 when Google based most of their searches on links and valued link building as a form of credibility.
But, why links are important?
Google thinks: “If more links are pointing to a website, then the content in that site is of high quality, so I should rank those sites in top of search results.”
Google’s new PageRank Algorithm focuses on ranking a site based on a number of links to the site.
But there’s a catch.
Today, Google doesn’t rank your site only based on the number of links.
In early 2000’s Google discovered people are paying to buy links so that they can rank high up in search results. It was then, Google released new ranking algorithms to tackle this problem.
Thanks to recent updates like Google Penguin, which focuses on sites using paid links and drop their search engine rank.
Have a look at the history of link building in SEO, below:
Google’s Penguin algorithm focuses on quality of links than the just quantity of links.
Think your site have a backlink from Wikipedia, then Google thinks your site has a high-quality content, so that even Wikipedia has linked to you. So, Google will increase your page rank.
If you want your site to rank at the top of search results you should get high-quality links to your site.

2.Broken Link Building.
Broken link building is a tactic that involves finding resources in your niche that are no longer live, recreating a version of the content.
Then, reaching out to webmasters who link to that content asking them to replace the broken link with a link to your newly created resource.
So, let’s see how to build links through this technique.
This technique involves a 4 step process:
1. Find resource pages.
2. Check for broken links.
3.Know what was the content before the link was dead.
4. Present your content as a substituent.
That’s it. If page owner agrees to use your link instead of that dead link, then you got a backlink to your site.
Backlink from a most popular site has more influence than the backlink from less popular one.
So, here I’ll be discussing a method to get backlinks from a popular site Wikipedia.
Let’s start then,
Step1: Find Resource Pages.
Although there are many resource pages on the web, Wikipedia is like the boss of all. This is because you can find info. about anything using Wikipedia.
So, the backlink from Wikipedia has tons of value.
Step 2: Check For Broken Links.
Checking for broken links starts from a simple Google search.
Here’s the Google search operator you to use:
Let’s assume you ran a tech blog focused on Dell products.
So, replace Dell in the place of KEYWORD, like so:
You will get search results for the keyword. Then, click on each result.
After, entering into Wikipedia page press Ctrl+F, which opens a search bar in the top right corner of the page.
type “dead link” in that search bar and click enter.
Then, where ever the keyword “dead link” is found it is highlighted, as shown below:
Then copy the URL of one of the dead link.
Step 3: Know what was the content before the link was dead.
Since, you have copied the link address, plug it in The Wayback Machine tool.
Then, You will see something like this:
Then, click on the date which is highlighted with other(Blue especially) color. Then you can see the content which was there on that date.
If you have a post similar to the content then you can try replacing the previous link with yours.
Step 4: Present your content as a substituent
Now you have the content which will be fit in the place of that broken link, try contacting the page owner and ask them to replace your content with the old, broken one.
3.Reverse Guest Posting.
Here in reverse guest posting, you ask influential authors to write a guest post or posts in your site.
Authors won’t just share the information with their audience but they also link back to their past work. So, you can build strong relationships with the author’s audience.
This method can drive huge traffic to a site, but the difficulty lies in getting an influential author to write for you.
You need a plan, to make this technique work for you. These are the essential 3 steps:
- Figure out what you want from a guest contributor and how often do you want them to contribute?
- Search for the authors who can contribute to your blog. Also, find out whether the author has a good number of followers.
- Go out and try to connect with those authors and talk with them about this opportunity.
Everything is fine but you might have a question in your mind:
Where do I find authors who can contribute to my blog?
This the traditional method of getting a backlink to your site.
Here you write and publish a blog post on someone else’s blog or website and get the link to your site.
Question. Is guest posting good or bad for increasing page rank?
Guest posting can be considered as a good practice to increase your site’s page rank.
According to Mike from Search Engine Guru, when it comes to SEO, guest posting on other sites is five times as valuable as creating new content on your own site. (So long as you get the backlink.)
So, You should concentrate on publishing your posts ionthose sites which are already popular, so that you get high-quality backlinks to your site.
I highly recommend you go through this step-by-step guide to Guest posting to get some high-quality backlinks.
Although, there are many other link building techniques like:
- Blog commenting
- Publishing Infographics
- Link exchanging
I have explained those which I think are the most important ones to build high-quality backlinks.
Chapter 3: Never Try These
Actually, there are two types of link buildings strategies.
One is White hat link building and the other is Black hat link building. All the techniques I mentioned above are White hat link building strategies.
So, What’s the difference between white hat and black hat link building?
Google’s Penguin update is in search of the sites which use black hat link building strategies and it will ban the site from Google.S o, don’t think of using Black hat link building techniques.
Now it’s your turn to start building quality links to your site.
